When to kitesurf in La Guajira: the wind month by month

From December to April the wind hardly ever fails, and June to August is a very good second season. This is how we plan our students’ trips.

The question we hear most before a trip is simple: when should I come? In La Guajira the wind is not a matter of luck, but it is a matter of season. This is what we see every year in Riohacha.

High season: December to April

The northeast trade winds blow almost every day, usually between 18 and 30 knots. It is the best time to learn fast and to progress, because you can plan your coaching days with real confidence. December, January, February and March are the most reliable months; April is still very good.

Second season: June to August

June and August are very good and July is usually excellent. It is a great alternative if you travel during the European summer holidays.

The quiet months: September to November

September and October have the lightest wind of the year, and May and November are transition months. You can ride, but with fewer windy days in a row. If you come at this time, tell us your dates and we will tell you honestly what to expect.

How to plan your days

  • Leave some margin. If you are coming for PROGRESS (two days) or COMPLETE (three days), plan one or two extra days so we can choose the best wind.
  • One session a day. We coach in three-hour sessions: two 90-minute blocks with a break. Your body and your head need time to absorb what you learned.
  • Book early in high season. Private sessions fill up, especially in December, January and around Easter.

Water and weather

The water is around 27 °C all year, so you do not need a wetsuit. The sun is strong: water-resistant sunscreen and a lycra are your best friends.
